British Imperialism

British Imperialism of India The period of Imperialism is commonly viewed as an extremely stinting time in which all imperialist regimes greatly benefited. However, when render in depth, Imperialism was the total opposite. The period of Imperialism, in which European roles conquered bare-assed colonies across the globe from the 17th to the 19th centuries, resulted in an epoch driven by greed and a complete violence struggle. John Hobson, an English journalist and economist of the time, best criticizes Imperialism in his1902 book, Imperialism: A Study. In his book, Hobson clearly states, The dominant direct drive [behind imperialism] was the demand for markets and for profitable investment(qtd. in Winks 9). Hobson declares that powerful financial leaders executed poor British foreign ordinance based on the sole purpose of gaining wealth. He consequently concludes, as a result, that British Imperialism was not as financially successful as commonly believed. Finally, Hobson partially blames the ineffectiveness of Imperialism on the British ideal of Anglo superiority, and the British misunderstanding of other cultures (Winks 11). Therefore, as argued by Hobson, British Imperialism of India was neither socially, nor politically, nor economically beneficial for Britain. The British elevated social tensions in India because the British misunderstood Indian culture, were constantly forced to over-expand the British Government, and spent endless amounts in an attempt to maintain order. To begin with, Britains Imperialism of India was not socially beneficial. The British were unsuccessful in establishing a working alliance with the Indian people, and, as a result, British Imperialism never reached its supreme potential. Cultural tensions immediately formed between the British and their Indian subjects due to Britains neglect of Indian culture.
